HOSTEL TRIPS

Unless otherwise stated, hostel weekend trips involve walks on Saturday and Sunday with overnight accommodation on the Friday and Saturday nights. Trips a long way from Cambridge are often for 3 nights or more. ‘A’ walks are guaranteed and involve around 6 hours walking. There will only be ‘B’ walks if a leader volunteers – please do come forward so we can advertise well in advance. Help with routes is available. We normally travel in cars, returning Sunday evening. All bookings to Jill Tuffnell with cheques payable to ‘E G Tuffnell’. Please book early as the full balance is due 2 months before the trip and it may be difficult to secure a place late on. Also offers of cars and requests from those seeking a lift. You are very welcome to book into a nearby B&B and join us for the walks.

Kirkby Stephen YH, Thursday 5th August to Sunday 8th

Kirkby Stephen is the half-way point on the Wainwright ‘Coast to Coast’ route and is surrounded by beautiful countryside. Food available – and lots of pubs in the town.

Tanners Hatch YH Surrey, Saturday October 2nd

Just a one-night stay at this remote YH near Polesden Lacy, although you will have to do some light back-packing for two days! On the Sunday we will walk along the North Downs and return to Cambridge by train in the afternoon/early evening. Extra places booked. Cost £9.30.

OBITUARIES

1) Geoff Waters

We record with sadness Geoff’s recent death while on holiday in India with his wife Barbara. Geoff and Barbara were keen travellers, and their trip fulfilled a long-felt desire to see the sights of India. Aged 75, he was a veteran rambler, wine-buff and enthusiastic Scrabble player. We express our deep sympathy to Barbara and their two sons.

2) Rob Ward

Those who knew Rob have been deeply shocked by his untimely death. Many members attended his funeral (a humanist service) on 6th February, and a tree planting ceremony at Byron’s Pool on 26th March.

There will be a 13-mile walk in his memory on Sunday 13 June (see notice above).

3) Rosemary Ward

Rosemary died peacefully of leukaemia in the Arthur Rank Hospice on 15 February aged 86. She was a Club member for many years, and a member of the Midweek Players. Many of her friends attended her funeral, and donations were made to the British Red Cross and NZ Cancer Research. After cremation, her ashes were flown to New Zealand.

Jonathan’s Amazing Walks

In September/October 2003 Jonathan Phillips, aged 11, and his mother Margaret (occasional Sunday B walkers) walked 750 km across northern Spain to Santiago de Compostella. This was the 4th and final stage in a journey which began in 2000. Each year since they have spent 4-6 weeks walking, following the old pilgrim route from Cluny to Le Puy, before completing the pilgrimage – a total distance of about 2000 km.
